SUNY Oneonta’s fourth annual Mindful Mile & Fight Hunger 5K event on Sunday, Sept. 18, raised more than $5,000 for Riverside Elementary School’s Action Hero Backpack Program, a weekend meal-assistance initiative for local children.

SUNY Oneonta’s academic quad was filled with vibrant, colorful flags, booming Latin music and smiling faces as the college kicked off Latinx Heritage Month with a parade Thursday, Sept. 15. The parade was the first of several campus events organized by the Office of Equity and Inclusion and others to mark Latinx Heritage Month. Other highlights include Sept. 15 and Sept. 22 screenings hosted by the Students of Color Coalition of the popular Disney movie “Encanto” with a discussion of mental health within the BIPOC community and how it is depicted in the movie. There will also be a Latinx Heritage trivia night on Oct. 5.
SUNY Oneonta kicked off a semester-long commemoration of the 30th anniversary of The Black List on Sept. 7 with a “Remembering The Black List and Moving Forward” event series that included faculty-led teach-ins and teach-outs, the dedication of the college’s new Center for Racial Justice and Inclusive Excellence, and a screening of the “Brothers of the Black List” documentary.
Pitching tents, cooking and camping under the starry night sky, jumping into swimming holes, hiking, and seeing the geology of the Adirondack Region first-hand? All in a day’s work during this year’s GEOFYRST trip, an immersive outdoor experience for new SUNY Oneonta students.

Seventeen first-year SUNY Oneonta students took part in the trip, a one-credit pre-semester fall course exploring New York and the Northeast. On Aug. 18, students dropped off their belongings for the semester at their residence hall rooms on campus, then packed up vans with gear and hit the road, returning six days later with observations, photos, stories and new friends.
