Awards
Outstanding Senior Academic Achievement Award
Given to a senior standing with a minimum GPA of 3.5 in the major; exceptional academic improvement over four semesters; excellence in research; leadership and involvement in department, campus and community activities; and participation in academic and/or professional situations outside SUNY Oneonta.
Ethel Ray & Ada Crippen Award
Given to a graduating senior for excellence in American history.
Redfield History Student Award
Given to a graduating senior for excellence in European history.
World History Award
Given to a history major with excellence in world history with a minimum of three upper-division WHIS courses.
Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Award
Given by the New York State Organization, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, to a resident of New York state who is a graduating senior at a New York state college or university. Applicants must write an essay on why they have chosen to study U.S. History and their future plans, and must supply a letter of recommendation from a faculty member. Candidates should have a GPA of B+ or higher.
Sam Caplen Service Award
Presented to a history major to recognize the outstanding service they have provided to the Department of History.
Michael Wright Memorial Book Award
Presented to a history major with an interest in American and/or European history who has demonstrated high achievement in coursework and participation in history-related activities outside the classroom. A book will be purchased in the student’s name and donated to the Milne Library.
Ralph Watkins Award
Presented to a History major who exemplifies dedication to the values of academic excellence and diversity that Dr. Watkins, a former professor of African American History, represented.
Honor Society
The History Department hosts a chapter of Phi Alpha Theta (ΦΑΘ), the national honor society for undergraduate and graduate students and professors of history. Undergraduate students must complete a minimum of 12 semester hours (four 3 s.h. courses) in history, and achieve a minimum GPA of 3.1 in history courses and a GPA of 3.0 or better overall. Students enrolled in an online program are not eligible. Membership is not limited to history majors.
Scholarships
Jacqueline Nicholson and History Department Scholarship
This award is given to an incoming first-year or transfer student majoring in history. This award is renewable.
