SUNY Oneonta was pleased to host U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer for a meeting with community leaders on Wednesday, March 31. The senator met with SUNY Oneonta Acting President Dennis Craig, Hartwick College President Margaret Drugovich, City of Oneonta Mayor Gary Herzig and Otsego County Board of Representatives Chair David Bliss to discuss priorities and opportunities for improvement in our region.
Sen. Schumer provided updates on the status of federal relief funds and the American Rescue Plan and discussed the impact of the pandemic on county tourism and income. He also spoke about opportunities to improve infrastructure and access to broadband and ideas surrounding assistance for student debt relief. In particular, Sen. Schumer wanted to hear concerns from and initiatives within the community and colleges, and recognized the importance of integration between the campuses and local government.
"We appreciate the senator’s time and interest in the challenges faced by the county, city and colleges," said Acting President Craig. "It is encouraging to have his support as we work together to move our community forward."
